Researching the Hidden Struggles of Language Anxiety to Foster Empathy

What We Are Studying

At Language Anxiety Tales, our research focuses on understanding the effects of Native Language Anxiety and Foreign Language Anxiety on individuals’ well-being and social interactions. These forms of anxiety are not widely discussed, yet they affect millions around the world. By studying these issues, we aim to uncover the root causes, the societal impact, and ways to address these challenges.

Why We Study Language Anxiety

Language is more than just a tool for communication – it is a deeply personal aspect of who we are. Our studies aim to explore how language anxiety affects people’s lives and how it shapes their identity. We believe that by researching these anxieties, we can raise awareness, encourage cultural tolerance, and provide people with the support they need.

Our Goal

Our ultimate goal is to create a platform where individuals experiencing language anxiety can find community, understanding, and resources. We want to change the conversation around language and identity and help others see language as an expression of culture, history, and selfhood – not as something to be ashamed of.

About this Survey

This survey aims to explore how language influences our personal identity, cultural connection, and everyday experiences. Whether you primarily use your native language or have adopted a different one, language plays a crucial role in shaping who we are. This study focuses on Native Language Anxiety (NLA)—the feelings of discomfort or anxiety when using one’s mother tongue—and examines how stereotypes and societal expectations can influence language use and preferences. Your participation will help us better understand the complexities of language choice and its emotional impact.
